Hay voces que suenan a ruido, a ciudad o a tráfico; hay voces engoladas que hablan de amores y dolores azucarados y empalagosos; hay voces que hablan de rebeldia, mientras cuentan las ganancias del último disco... y entre todo esto, hay voces que hablan del otro lado, voces quedas con letras profundas como la vida...
Voces como la de Johnny Cash...

Nacido en Arkansas el 26 de Febrero de 1932, criado entre campos de algodón y música folk, desde pequeño demostro ser un fanático de la música, tanto , que ya a los 12 años componía sus primeros temas.

Contemporáneo de Elvis Presley y Jerry Lee Lewis, la fama costo que llegara, pero una vez que lo hizo, nunca más lo abandono, incluso ahora, cuando estamos próximos a celebrar el segundo aniversario de su muerte, el 26 de Febrero del 2004.

Su vida es la clásica historia de reyes hoy y mendigos mañana. Conoció la gloria en los años 50, sucumbió a las drogas y el alcohol en los '60 s y volvió a las pistas en los '70 s, para convertirse en una leyenda viva de la música comprometida en los Estados Unidos.

Conocido como "The Man In Black" por vestir siempre de negro en sus presentaciones, se definió como el cantante de los pobres, los sin voz, los oprimidos y los que sufren. Se explica así que su mas famosa placa sea "Johnny Cash At Folsom Prison", prisión del estado de California, donde fue el primero en realizar un concierto para los convictos de dicho lugar.

Junto a su mujer, la también cantante June Carter, desplegó durante su vida una intensa campaña de ayuda a las minorias indígenas, los prisioneros y los pobres, a través de canciones reivindicativas de estos sectores y acciones directas a nivel comunitario.

Su voz profunda y abaritonada fue el telón perfecto para letras que hablan de añoranzas, hombres derrotados y soledad. Pero las suyas también son historias de esfuerzo, de cariño y de esperanza en medio de un paisaje devastado.

Estremecedoras son sus versiones de temas antiguos o nuevos de otros artistas. Recomendables son sus versiones de Bridge Over Troubled Waters , con Fionna Apple; The Wanderer, con U2; Hurt , con Trent Reznor.

A pesar de no ser de gusto del público masivo, la calidad de este viejo cowboy lo hace altamente recomdable para aquellos dias nublados en que todo parece estar mal... Quizás sea recurrente su imagen en el cine independiente, como sus cameos en Faraway, So Close, de Wim Wenders , o la pelicula que se proyecta en los cines por estos dias, Walk The Line, que es un resumen de su carrera apartir de su autobiografía y de los datos aportados por June.

Quizás el country no tenga que ver mucho con quienes hablan español, pero les recomiendo le den una oportunidad a Johnny Cash... despues me cuentan...
